The official dedication of Phase 1B of the South Demonstration Project took place on June 20th at Kahle Drive. This one-mile segment from Kahle Drive at Highway 50 to Elks Point Road is the first phase of what will eventually be a multi-use trail around the whole Nevada side of the lake, and is described in more detail in the following link.http://southtahoenow.com/story/06/23/2013/new-bicycle-path-part-plan-connect-all-lake-tahoe-trails Construction of Phase 1C, which will extend over a mile from Elks Point Road to Round Hill Pines Resort, is due to start in August, 2013.
Lumos & Associates is the principal design firm for the South Demonstration Project. AECOM prepared the environmental document, did the landscaping and revegetation design and Matzoll Development Consultants was the construction manager. Besides over a mile of paved trail, Phase 1B includes the expansion of the trailhead parking lot at Kahle Drive, with a restroom and picnic area, and a 210-foot long, 12-foot wide, boardwalk over Burke Creek. To minimize impacts to the creek wetlands, the boardwalk was constructed on helical piers and has a wood support structure and deck. The trail, which is fully ADA accessible, opened for use in the fall of 2012 and has proven to be very popular with locals and visitors alike. It has a wide spectrum of users including walkers, bicyclists, runners, and skateboarders.
In addition to the design and construction documents, Lumos provided the basemapping, geotechnical investigation report, construction staking, construction inspection, and materials testing for the project.
